“Today in Lysychansk the Russians fired on a crowd with Uragan multiple rocket launchers while civilians were collecting water from a reservoir. Eight residents died, 21 were taken to hospital,” Sergei Gaidai, governor of the Lugansk region, said on Telegram.

The city of Lysychansk is the next target for Russian forces following their full occupation of the neighboring city of Severodonetsk, following weeks of fighting that ravaged both cities and killed dozens of civilians.

It is the last major city left to be conquered by the Russians in the Lugansk region, one of the two provinces of the Donbas industrial basin.

The Ukrainian army announced on Friday that it was withdrawing from Severodonetsk to better defend Lysychansk, where street clashes are taking place according to pro-Russian separatists fighting alongside Moscow forces.

Gaidai reported last week that the fighting was causing “catastrophic destruction” in Lysychansk, which had a population of about 100,000 before the war.
