Mexico and Guatemala unite to clarify the migrant tragedy of San Antonio

“We held a meeting in which we agreed to strengthen ties between countries in order to clarify the facts and support the corresponding investigations,” Minutti said at a press conference in which the representatives reported the latest news they had regarding this case. .

Minutti defined the meeting as “very productive” and a reflection of the “good understanding” between the authorities of both countries and with the United States.

For his part, Búcaro emphasized that the objectives now are “the investigation of justice, the protection of human rights and the repatriation of nationals.”

And he sent a warning message to the “coyotes”, as those who traffic migrants are known, promising to cross the border: “We have sentences of up to 50 years in prison for this crime in Guatemala and we can even ask the United States for extradition.”

Of the total number of fatalities, Minutti confirmed that there are 27 deceased with Mexican nationality, as well as 2 of the people hospitalized (one of them very serious), and that they come from the states of Guanajuato, Veracruz, Oaxaca, State of Mexico, Zacatecas. , Querétaro, Morelos and Mexico City.

A specialized group from the Mexican Attorney General’s Office (FGR) arrived in San Antonio yesterday to cooperate with local authorities and identify the victims.

An investigation that is still ongoing and for which, according to Minutti, up to a hundred calls have been received from relatives looking for missing or unidentified people.

“We will provide all kinds of psychological support to the relatives and we will pay all the costs that are necessary so that they can be with their relatives as soon as possible,” Minutti concluded.
