These vaccines will also have to target the initial strain of covid-19 to amplify the immune response.

Laboratories Pfizer and Moderna, which produce messenger RNA vaccines against covid-19, have been developing and testing immunizers against BA.1, the first strain of omicron. Representatives from both companies told the committee meeting that it would take them about three months to produce BA.4 and BA.5 vaccines on a large scale.

Pfizer has published preliminary results showing that its BA.4 and BA.5 vaccine elicited strong antibody production in mice, but has not yet started human clinical trials.

For its part, Novavax, which manufactures a “subunit” vaccine (which contains a component of the virus but not completely), announced that it could offer containment for BA.4 and BA.5 by the end of this year.

Initial applications would continue to target the strain that first emerged in Wuhan, China, the FDA added.
