Mexico closes ports and forecasts rains in six states due to the impact of Karl

Mexican authorities warned this Friday about torrential to heavy rains in six states of the country and announced the closure of seaports due to the imminent impact of storm Karl in the southeast Mexicanspecifically in the state of Tabasco, in the Atlantic Ocean.

At a press conference, the National Water Commission (Conagua) of Mexicowhich operates the National Meteorological Service (SMN), predicted that Karl would touch Mexican land between the municipalities of centla Y Paradisein the state of Tabascotonight.

“On its way to that area, its cloud bands will cause torrential rains in the state (of Tabasco) and in Chiapas; intense in the south of Veracruz, oaxaca and Campeche, as well as forts in Yucatan”detailed the Mexican authorities at a press conference.

Likewise, the Meteorological Service anticipated winds of up to 80 kilometers per hour in Tabasco and Campeche.

The general coordinator of the SMN, Alejandra Margarita Méndez, explained that, in total, from October 14 to 16, accumulated rainfall of 300 to 350 millimeters is expected in Chiapas and Tabasco, as well as 150 to 250 millimeters in Campeche, Oaxaca and Veracruz.

In its report, the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) announced that for the next 24 hours waves of up to 6 feet are expected on the south-central coast of Veracruz and the Sonda de Campeche, as well as waves of up to 8 feet (2, 4 meters) on the coast of Tabasco and the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

In its 48-hour forecast, Semar predicted that waves of up to 6 feet will prevail over the southwestern region of the Gulf of Mexico and the coasts of Veracruz, Tabasco and the Sonda de Campeche.

The Mexican authorities also recommended that the maritime-port community that carries out coastal or sport fishing, nautical, beach and tourist activities, among others, follow the indications and guidelines of the maritime and local authorities, in relation to the prevention and safeguarding of human life in the sea, waterways, coasts and beaches.

The Mexican government also reported that the ports in these Mexican entities will remain closed as a preventive measure.

He explained that among these ports are those of Coatzacoalcos, Balzapote and Tonalá, in Veracruz; Dos Bocas, Frontera, Sánchez Magallanes and Villahermosa, in Tabasco.

Likewise, those of Isla del Carmen, Cayo Arcas, Ta’ Kuntah, Yuum K’ak Naab, Isla Aguada, Palizada, Nuevo Campechito, Sabancuy, Atasta, Campeche and Seybaplaya, in Campeche.

For their part, the Mexican authorities announced that the Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Attention (PIAE) brigades are already located in Veracruz and Tabasco, where they have specialized teams to deal with situations such as possible floods or river overflows.
