So far this year, the Mexican government has received 77,000 Venezuelans as refugees, a figure that already equals the number of permanent residents of that country in Mexico.Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard reported this Wednesday.

Their presence has increased since an agreement came into force last week whereby the United States can return to Mexico those who try to enter irregularly through the border between the two countries.

Ebrard detailed, however, that the number of returned Venezuelans has been decreasing, from 744 the day the measure began to 179 on the fourth day.

The migration agreement establishes that Washington will accept up to 24,000 Venezuelans as long as they enter through a formal process and by air, which frustrated the effort of thousands who have tried to cross from Mexico.

Many of them remain stranded in the southeast of the country waiting for a safe conduct permit that will allow them to reach the border with USA despite the current restrictions.
