Trump considers announcing new White House bid after midterm elections

The ex-president donald trump is considering announcing a third candidacy for the White House this month and is calling confidants to discuss possible scenarios, seeking to benefit from what are expected to be Republican victories in Tuesday’s midterm elections, three aides said.

“I think like a moth to the light, Trump will run in 2024.”an adviser told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. “I think wanting to come forward and announce it before Thanksgiving gives him a huge advantage over his opponents and he understands that.”

An announcement in the coming weeks could also knock potential rivals within his GOP off the ballot, aides said, though they added that it was possible the former president could delay a decision or change his mind.

A representative for Trump did not respond to a request for comment.

A source familiar with Trump’s plans said he intends to announce his campaign shortly after Tuesday’s elections and has been probing possible collaborators to join the effort. The source was contacted by the campaign to gauge his interest.

Nonpartisan election forecasts and polls say that Republicans are likely to win a majority in the House of Representatives and are also likely to control the Senate, which would give them the power to block President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda during the next two years.

Democrats’ election hopes have taken a hit due to voter concerns about inflation, and Biden’s low public approval rating, which has hovered below 50% for more than a year, hovering at 40%. in a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll.

But after a conflicting four -year term, which ended with the assault on the Capitol by his followers on January 6, 2021, Trump also remains unpopular. The same survey at the end of last month showed that only 41% of Americans see it with good eyes.

The Thanksgiving party is November 24, which gives Trump a margin of two weeks after the elections to make his ad if he considers it.

Trump is keeping a close eye on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to win his re-election race on Tuesday against Democrat Charlie Crist. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and his former Vice President Mike Pence are also seen as possible rivals in his party.
