Dozens injured after fire in New York, US media report

At least 38 people were injured in a fire at an apartment building in the city of New Yorkwhich may have been caused by a lithium-ion battery, authorities told local media on Saturday.

Two of the injured were in critical condition and five others were seriously injured after the fire that broke out on East 52nd Street in Manhattan, said Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, quoted by CNN.

For his part, Dan Flynn, chief of the fire department, also said that with this there are almost 200 fires this year caused by this type of batteries used in small and light personal mobility devices, such as electric bicycles and scooters.

“We have had six deaths this year from these batteries that power mobility devices,” the official added.

Flynn said authorities believe the occupant of the apartment where the fire possibly started had been repairing bicycles in the building.
