The community of the Bochica neighborhood in the town of Engativá, Colombia, is outraged by what happened to an 85-year-old adult, who was abandoned by his own son. According to residents of the sector, the man refused to receive food or drink while he was waiting.
The grandfather was sitting in a chair right in front of the complex where his son lives, but he never went out to look for him. ‘Citytv’ spoke with the president of the board of directors of the residential unit, Nelsy Gutierrezand ensured that Members of the Mayor’s Office of Bogotá together with the authorities passed by the man around six in the afternoon.

In addition, the aforementioned media was able to find out that the older adult went to look for his son to receive help, since he had previously been hospitalized.
Gutiérrez managed to locate the son of the older adult; however, the response was not as expected.
That man responded by saying that he did not have time because he was working, and therefore, he would not go to pick up his father.
What is going to happen in this case?: the number of abandonment is worrying
According to the reports of the Health System in Bogotá, “Between 2021 and 2022, 139 cases of abandonment of older people have been registered, as well as 88 cases reported to the Family Police Stations, during the same period.
The Secretariat of Social Integration, for its part, estimates that “currently there are approximately 1,153,000 abandoned people over 60 years of age, which translates into 14% of the total population.”
There have been 139 cases of abandonment of older people between 2021 and 2022.
Taking into account that the elder’s son did not want to answer for him, article 17A of the Colombian Congress stipulates that the protection centers and care institutions must receive the affected older adult to guarantee their rights.
So, in this case the Secretariat of Social Integration intervened to provide the necessary services and those that are required. The 85-year-old man will be cared for by a 24-hour protection service.
On the other hand, the son of the older adult could be brought to trial. Article 229 of the Colombian Congress, which deals with domestic violence, stipulates that if any member of the family nucleus is mistreated, either physically or psychologically, “provided that the conduct does not constitute a crime punishable by a higher penalty, he will incur in four (4) to eight (8) years in prison.
