Armed men set fire to eight large trucks that were traveling with cargo along one of the main highways in the department of Norte de Santander, Colombiajust the day the government restarted in Caracas the peace talks with the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN).

According to what the truck drivers denounced, the attackers intercepted them as they were driving through the La Curva sector, where they forced them to get out of the vehicles and immediately set them on fire, before going into the mountains.

“Right now the guerrillas have just left, in front of the Sanjuana bridge, La Curva sector, and they have just burned several gondolas (trucks) and they are firing shots. This is delicate around here ”he alerted in an audio message to his colleagues the trucker Luis Castañeda, one of those affected.

In La Curva, which is part of the municipality of Bucarasica, for decades there has been intense guerrilla activity both from the ELN, which has historically had a strong presence in the area, and from the FARC dissidents, which arrived in recent years, for which the authorities have not been able to determine who perpetrated the attack.

The Governor of Norte de Santander convened a security council “with the purpose of addressing the situation of public order and security after the events that occurred.”

The Association of Cargo Transporters (ATC) repudiated the attack and made a “strong call” on its Twitter account to the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, to guarantee the safety of truckers and their vehicles.

“Forcefulness and no more destruction of the sector,” claimed the ATC, which also asked the Police and the Army for explanations for the insecurity on the roads.
