Parliament of Venezuela establishes legislative friendship team with Colombia

The Parliament of Venezuela established a friendship group on Tuesday to deepen its relations with the Legislative of Colombia and promote legal instruments that favor the development of the common border, during an act in which the ambassador of the Andean country in the Caribbean nation participated, Armando Benedetti.

The president of the group, Julio Chavezassured that parliamentarians from both countries will work together to “promote the necessary legal instruments”, for the purpose of “restore prosperity and comprehensive development” to the border, in addition to “empower” economic, academic, educational, cultural and scientific exchanges, among other areas.

“We will work with our counterparts, the Colombian congressmen, on different issues, so that we can contribute to total peace, and that will be one of the tasks, of the objectives, of this parliamentary group, which today has been formally installed”said.

He assured that parliamentarians from both countries have already held several meetings, including the one that took place last month in the Venezuelan state of Táchira (west), bordering Colombia, where “a memorandum of understanding was signed to develop all the issues” that affect the border, including trade, production, migration, transportation, and security.

For his part, the Colombian ambassador assured that there is a “need to create border legislation” in both countries, which -he assured- must “create an economic zone” common and invest in several municipalities.

Both countries resumed their diplomatic relations, broken in 2019, after the coming to power of the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, last August, a process that has advanced with the reopening of the border in September, after seven years closed to vehicular traffic, and with the reactivation of the air connection.

The Venezuela-Colombia friendship group was created last May, but its formal installation had not been carried out until this Tuesday.
