The children were not kidnapped, but evacuated through “contacts” in Russia, Peter D’Abrosca, a Tampa, Florida-based spokesman for the NGO, told AFP.

The surrogate lived in Donbasone of the regions of Ukraine most affected by the war. Due to the fighting he went to the Crimea and from there to St. Petersburgwhere she gave birth to twins in early September, according to the statement.

The babies ended up in a city orphanage and the parents, a couple from Texas who requested anonymity, tried in vain to get them back.

The parents contacted the NGO and one of its co-founders, Bryan Stern, traveled to Estonia to set up the mission from the town of Narva, on the border with Russia.

The statement does not specify how the babies were removed, and only indicates that “it took a week to prepare the mission and it was carried out in one day”. The twins were delivered to her parents.

Quoted in the statement, Bryan Stern “He deeply thanked” to the consular services of the US embassies in Moscow and Tallinn. He did not give details.
