The Pope expresses his “admiration” for the Ukrainians after nine months of war

The Pope Francisco has expressed his “admiration” for the way in which the Ukrainian people faced nine months of war after the Russian invasion, in a letter published today in which he also recalled the 90th anniversary of the “genocide” of the Holododor, the great famine suffered in soviet time.

“Dear brothers and sisters, in this sea of ​​ills and pains, and ninety years after the terrible genocide of the Holodomor, I am admired by your good fervor. Despite the enormous tragedy they are experiencing, the Ukrainian people have never lost heart or given in to commiseration.” wrote in the letter, dated November 24.

And I add: “The world has recognized a bold and strong people, a people that suffers and prays, cries and fights, resists and hopes”.

Franciscoconcerned about this conflict and its possible consequences since its beginning, on February 24, lamented once again that “the absurd madness of war” has been unleashed and wondered “how can men treat other men like this”.

“Your pain is mine” he pointed out, to commend the different Ukrainian social sectors that suffer from this situation.

He alluded to the children killed under the bombs, writing the names of some, like Kira from Odesa or Lisa from Vinnytsia: “I cry with you for every little one who, because of this war, lost his life (…). In each one of them is the defeat of all humanity.” denounced the pontiff.

He also reminded the young people that “to bravely defend the homeland they have had to hold hands instead of the dreams they had cultivated for the future.”

Francisco also lamented the situation of the elderly in Ukraine that “instead of spending a serene sunset they have been thrown into the gloomy night of war” or of women who suffer violence.

And he praised the volunteers who assist the displaced, injured or homeless in Ukraineespecially with the arrival of winter that will make the situation “even more tragic”.

The Argentine pontiff also had words for the Ukrainian authorities, for which he assured that he prays, because “On them weighs the duty to govern the country in tragic times and to make long-term decisions for peace and to develop the economy during the destruction of so many vital infrastructures, in cities and towns.”
