Electricity is hardly returning to Ukraine. More than six million homes were still suffering from power outages on Friday night, two days after massive strikes by Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. “Tonight, cuts continue in most regions and in Kyiv,” the head of state said.
Kyiv, which left about 600,000 houses without electricity on Friday evening, and its region, as well as Odessa, Lviv, Vinnytsia and Dnipropetrovsk regions, were most affected by the blackout, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his daily address, urging Ukrainians to save electricity in the regions where power has been restored.
Engineers continued to repair damage throughout the country. In the capital, “a third of Kyiv’s houses already have heating, specialists continue to restore it. Half of the users are still without electricity,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
“During the day, energy companies plan to turn on electricity for all users in turn,” Vitali Klitschko assured, at a time when the temperature was around zero degrees, and part of it was raining.
Russia blames Ukraine
Queues of cars waiting to fill up in front of several Kyiv gas stations have formed, and mobile phone networks continue to be disrupted in some areas.
Russia, for its part, says it only targets military infrastructure and blames the power outage on Ukraine’s air defenses. The Kremlin assured that Ukraine could end the suffering of its people by accepting Russia’s demands.
