Xi Jinping conveys to Kim Jong-un his desire to strengthen bilateral ties between China and North Korea

Xi made this statement in a letter sent to the North Korean dictator in response to Kim’s congratulations on his re-election for a third term as secretary general during the congress of the Chinese Communist Party held last October.

Beijing is Pyongyang’s main ally and economic benefactor since its support for the North’s cause in the civil war that took place between 1950 and 1953 on the Korean peninsula and which separated it into the two nations that currently settle on the territory.
