Xi Jinping conveys to Kim Jong-un his desire to strengthen bilateral ties between China and North Korea

Xi made this statement in a letter sent to the North Korean dictator in response to Kim’s congratulations on his re-election for a third term as secretary general during the congress of the Chinese Communist Party held last October.

“In different rounds of meetings, myself and my comrade, the general secretary (Kim), we established important common points of understanding and progress in relations (…) to advance in political solutions to the affairs of the peninsula and to safeguard common interests”Xi said in the letter reported by the North Korean state news agency KCNA.

both leaders “They vigorously defend the cause of socialism and have worked vigorously to safeguard peace and stability in the region and in the world”Xi added, also noting the “unprecedented changes” that are taking place in the world.

Xi and Kim “are willing to make new and active contributions to promoting peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region and in the world”, according to the North Korean propaganda agency.

Beijing is Pyongyang’s main ally and economic benefactor since its support for the North’s cause in the civil war that took place between 1950 and 1953 on the Korean peninsula and which separated it into the two nations that currently settle on the territory.
