Britain’s BBC media group reported on Sunday that one of its journalists in China was detained and “beaten and kicked by police” while covering protests in Shanghai against the anti-Covid policy.
“The BBC is extremely concerned about the treatment of our journalist Ed Lawrence, who was detained and handcuffed while covering the protests in Shanghai,” said a spokesman for BBC in a written statement sent to AFP.

He added that Lawrence “he was beaten and kicked by the police” during several hours of detentiondespite the fact that he is an accredited journalist in the country.
Hundreds of people demonstrated over the weekend in several Chinese cities, such as Shanghai and Beijing, against the confinements and restrictions imposed by the authorities in the fight against covid-19.

The spokesman indicated that “we have not received any explanation or apology from the Chinese authorities, apart from the statement by the officers, who later released him, that they had detained him for his own good in case he caught covid from the crowd. ”.
“We do not consider that to be a credible explanation,” he added.
