The information apparently included details about how people fled authoritarian governments in countries like China, Russia and Iran.as well as others trying to escape violent gangs elsewhere.

Activists say this could lead to attacks.

“On November 28, 2022, during routine updates, a document was erroneously published on ICE.gov for approximately five hours and included names and other personal information, as well as immigration information for approximately 6,000 aliens in ICE custody.” the agency said.

“Although not intentionally, this disclosure is a breach of procedure and the agency is investigating the incident and taking any necessary corrective action.”

Those affected are in ICE custody.reported the Los Angeles Times.

Blaine Bookey, legal director of the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies at Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, said this puts vulnerable people at significant risk.

“If they are taken back to those countries, they may suffer retaliation“, said.

“Or their families, friends or colleagues who are still in their countries may also suffer retaliation.”

Bookey stressed that the fact that all affected people are still in the custody of the immigration service increases the risk.

“The information is about individuals who are in detention, who have no freedom or control over where they are, and their information and personal details are now in a public document,” he added.
