A woman who watched her boyfriend kill 6 members of her Latino family in Chicago is sentenced to 25 years in prison

A woman who watched her ex-boyfriend kill six members of her family, including two young children, at their home in Chicago and then helped him steal his property was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years in prison.

Jafeth Ramos25, pleaded guilty to armed robbery and felony charges under a deal she reached with Cook County prosecutors last year in which she agreed to testify against her ex-boyfriend, Diego Uribe Cruzin exchange for a reduced sentence.

It should be noted that, to date, Ramos has been jailed for a little over six years, for which he will be accredited to the 25-year sentence that was applied to him this Tuesday. And he will have to serve at least 85% of his sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

“She was charged along with her co-defendant for her part in those crimes, and while she was testifying, she was also testifying about what her role was during the incident of the February 2, 2016 and specifically what he helped with and what role he played in the murder and armed robbery of that family.” explained Lisa Ranier, Cook County First Assistant State’s Attorney.

Additionally, her lawyer commented that while she has been detained, she has participated in study programs becoming an exceptional artist, for which reason she asked the court for a credit of 1,117 additional days towards the sentence. However, that petition is yet to be decided.

The state attorney’s office also mentioned that while Ramos has been in custody, he has participated in parenting classes and earned his general education diploma for which his lawyer was looking for those more than 1,000 days of accreditation towards the sentence, but added that it would be difficult to achieve it since the sentence must be fulfilled at least 85%.

For his part, Uribe Cruz was sentenced to life in prison last month on six counts of first-degree murder in the February 2016 murders at the victims’ bungalow in the neighborhood of Gage Parklocated on the southwestern side of the city.

In the trial of Uribe Cruz, Ramos told jurors that she accepted the plea deal in the hope that one day she would be able to be with her son again, who was just a toddler when the couple were arrested in May 2016.

During that trial, prosecutors alleged that he shot his aunt María Martínez, 32, after attempting to rob her on February 4, 2016, before fatally stabbing her children, ages 10 and 13, and stabbing or killing beating other family members to make sure there were no witnesses.

Secondly, bouquets he had refused to give a statement at his sentencing hearing.

As she was led out of court, bouquets she greeted family members on the verandah and made a heart shape with her hands. The family declined to comment afterwards.
