Costa Rica regrets the “rupture of the constitutional order” in Peru

“Costa Rica deeply regrets the decision of the President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, regarding the dissolution of the Congress of the Republic and the call for elections of a constituent assembly because it represents a rupture in the constitutional order,” expressed the Costa Rican Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The Costa Rican Foreign Ministry indicated that the decision of Castle it is also “a setback in the process of democratic dialogue and diplomatic negotiation that had been supported by the international community.”

The text adds that “accepting its democratic tradition, Costa Rica urges that the legal order be restored immediately and that all political and civil guarantees be respected”.

Castle He dictated this Wednesday to temporarily dissolve Congress and establish a national emergency government, hours before Parliament debated a vacancy motion (removal) against him that could have removed him from the head of state.

In a message to the nation, the Peruvian president also called “in the shortest possible time, elections for a new Congress with constituent powers to draft a new Constitution within a period of no more than 9 months.”

Castle He also ordered a nationwide curfew starting this Wednesday from 10:00 p.m. local time (3:00 GMT on Thursday) and that “the judicial system, the Judiciary, the Public Ministry, the National Board of Justice are being reorganized (JNJ) and the Constitutional Court (TC)”.

The plenary session of the Peruvian Congress dismissed hours later Pedro Castillo for “permanent moral incapacity” with 101 of 130 votes in favor.
