On December 9, 2021, a trailer where the migrants were traveling overcrowded suffered an overturn on the highway of Tuxtla Gutierrez to Chiapa de Corzoin the state of Chiapasin which 56 migrants died.
This Friday, the Archbishop of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Fabio Martínez Castilla, called on the Mexican authorities to “find the person or persons responsible for the accident that caused the death of the migrants who were traveling crowded in a box of a trailer.”
At the end of the mass that he offered in memory of the deceased migrants, the prelate told the media: “It’s been precisely a year and we don’t know anything, what a shame I thought there was already something, I call the authorities so that this is a voice, something must be done for the migrants, something must be done for the defenseless people and for those who suffer”.
In addition, he asked “make more humanitarian laws where the person is put at the center”.
The ceremony took place next to the so-called Puente del Migrante, where the tragic accident occurred.

Other families donated images of the Virgin of Guadalupe and San Juan Diego for the local chapel, as is the case of the Lumbral Ruiz family.
“It is to commemorate and that there is a point where the pain is remembered, the suffering of the people at the time of the accident, my name does not matter if not those who died, their families,” said family members.
Because it is the border with Guatemala, the state of Chiapas is an obligatory passage for migrants seeking to reach the United States. However, they do so on roads in poor condition or controlled by organized crime.
Traveling crammed into trailers is one of the most dangerous ways migrants use to smuggle across Mexico to the United States, for which they pay smugglers thousands of dollars.
According to reports from organizations, 2022 has been the most tragic year, since at least 853 migrants died in the last 12 months in their attempt to cross the Mexican border with the United States without documents.
Despite the eminent danger they are in, thousands of migrants who have left their countries in search of the American Dream continue to cross the southern border.
