Iranian Regime ‘Afraid of Its Own People’, US Says

USA condemned this Monday the second execution in Iran of a demonstrator detained during the protests that have shaken the country for three months and considered that these death sentences show that the regime of the Islamic Republic fears its people.

“These harsh sentences, and now the first public execution (for the protests) are meant to intimidate the people of Iran, are meant to suppress dissent, and just show how much the Iranian leadership is afraid of its own people,” added.

At the UN, the spokesman Stephane Dujarric called for an end to executions and said that “There is no place for capital punishment.”

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Anthony Guterresestimated that “the circumstances were particularly cruel”, Dujarric said.

Majesty RahnavardThe 23-year-old was sentenced to death by a court in the north-eastern city of Mashhad for killing two members of the security forces and wounding four other people, the judiciary news agency Mizan Online reported.

He was hanged in public in the city, rather than inside the prison, it added.
