The Government of Portugal mobilizes to repatriate its compatriots stranded by the protests in Peru

The government of Portugal reported today that forty of its nationals held in Peru due to the closure of airports and highways are “safe” and in contact with their Embassy in Lima to leave the country as soon as possible.

The Ministry of Foreign Business explained this Thursday in a statement that Portuguese citizens who cannot leave the Peru They are found in the regions of Cusco, Arequipa and Aguas Calientes (Machu Pichu).

He appealed to the Portuguese in Peru “avoid land transfers” and advised against non-essential trips to the country.

The Peruvian Government decreed this Wednesday the state of emergency throughout the country for 30 days after the protests that have left eight fatalities among the civilian population, injured more than 200 policemen and an undetermined number of arrested and injured.

The mobilizations, especially in the south of the country, call for the resignation of the current president, Dina Boluartethe release of former president Pedro Castillo, detained for a week after a failed “self-coup”, and the advancement of elections.
