Chile announces charter flight to evacuate tourists stranded in Cusco

The Chilean Foreign Ministry reported that a charter flight is scheduled for this Monday from the touristic Peruvian city of Cusco to evacuate visitors stranded by the demonstrations that have already left 20 dead in the midst of a political crisis in Peru.

“Together with other embassies, a charter flight from Cusco to Lima is being organized to evacuate our compatriots who still remain in the city and whose airlines were unable to reschedule their flights last weekend,” said a statement from the Foreign Ministry. Chilean that did not specify which other countries participate in this operation.

The flight announced in Chile is scheduled to depart from Cusco at 5:46 PM Peruvian time (22:46 GMT) this day.

Violent protests over the political crisis that broke out in Peru on December 7 left thousands of tourists stranded.

Some 4,500 visitors were able to leave Cusco on Friday after the reopening of the airport in that town in southeastern Peru, with some 437,000 inhabitants.

Another 200 tourists managed to leave the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu on Saturday by train, vehicles and on foot to Cusco.

The protests, which have left at least 20 dead, demand between the closure of Congress, the advancement of the elections and the freedom of former president Pedro Castillo, dismissed and imprisoned since the beginning of the crisis for trying to close Congress, to intervene in public powers and rule by decree.
