Apple employees launch a movement to denounce harassment and discrimination

About fifteen American Apple employees on Monday launched a website called #AppleToo, recalling the name of the #MeToo movement. Like the latter, the platform intends to make public facts of sexual harassment or assault and discrimination. It focuses on the actions of employees of the American group, indicates The Verge.

Eight different stories have already been shared on the site, which also comes in the form of a twitter account. The creators of #AppleToo informed their colleagues of the arrival of their movement via a message on a server shared by approximately 200 employees and contractors of the company. “It’s time to think differently”, can we read on the platform, in reference to Apple’s slogan.

Put an end to “humiliation, isolation and manipulation”

The organizers of the movement said they took all official channels internally to denounce wrongdoing and have spoken to management, human resources and other services. “Nothing has changed,” they lamented. The founders of #AppleToo felt that their employer had “escaped the critical eye of public opinion for too long”.

They pointed to “a culture of secrecy creating an opaque and intimidating fortress”. The site officials said they no longer want to accept “the persistent injustices” or “the humiliation, isolation and manipulation” faced by victims of harassment in society. The launch of the site and the Twitter account also caused a reaction from former employees.

“I experienced so many shocking things when I worked at Apple, testified Timnit Gebru, who was also an employee of Google. And I always wondered how they managed to keep it from being known. I am delighted to see that Apple employees are organizing themselves. It is time for Apple to assume its responsibilities ”.
