The fire, which also destroyed a rural school, broke out in the communes of Nacimiento and Santa Juana, in the Biobío region, south of the Chilean capital.

“The fire is in combat and active. Nearly 5,000 hectares of plantations of pine, eucalyptus, scrub, native vegetation, agricultural crops and vineyards have been affected.”explained the regional director of the National Forestry Corporation, Rodrigo Jara.

The flames, Jara added, “are contained on the right flank by the river,” so efforts are concentrated on the left flank.

“We had to evacuate the neighbors across the river”the mayoress of Santa Juana, Ana Albornoz, said on Radio Biobío.

There are also minor fires in other communes in the region such as Yumbel, Cabrero and Los Ángeles, according to Onemi.
