Thousands of migrants protest to demand asylum on the southern border of Mexico

Some 5,000 migrants from various countries protested this Monday at the southern border of Mexicowhere they forcibly entered the offices of the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees (Comar) of the Government.

The migrants had gathered since the weekend, creating a long line and completely closing a street on the outskirts of the Comar in Tapachula, a city on the border with Guatemala.

Foreigners got tired of waiting for the Mexican authorities to attend to their asylum requests.

The migrants are mostly Haitians, Venezuelans, Cubans, Peruvians, Panamanians and other Central American countries, and they have piled up in the absence of authorities.

Yanela, a migrant from Cuba, denounced that they remain unanswered on public roads, for which she considered that the authorities should organize people by country so that there can be greater order and agility in their procedures.

“We want papers to stay in Mexico legally and continue the journey to the northern border with the United States.”, he told EFE.

The migrants arrived from Sunday night to sleep to occupy a place to enter and take a shift.

“We entered on December 31, we saw a large crowd of people, it becomes a real chaos and disorder, so it is important that the authorities take action on the matter, because this can get out of control,” Cuban Jordi Armando told EFE.

In the face of the protests, Comar officials warned the migrants that they will only serve families with children, so the other adults will have to wait their turn in line.

The fact reflects the record migratory flow to the United States, whose Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office detained an unprecedented number of more than 2.76 million undocumented immigrants in fiscal year 2022.

In addition, the Comar received more than 111,000 asylum requests in the first 11 months of last year, with which 2022 would close as the second year with the most applications in Mexico since there is a record.
