Iran: Former Iranian Deputy Defense Minister sentenced to death for spying for UK

The Iranian Justice announced on Wednesday the death sentence of a former deputy defense minister for spying for the intelligence services of the United Kingdomin one of the “most important cases of infiltration” of the security of Iran.

Alireza Akbari, who held the position of deputy defense minister during the tenure of former reformist president Mohamed Katami (1997-2005), was sentenced by a court for “spying for MI6”, the British foreign intelligence service, reported Mizan, news agency Power of attorney.

Mizan did not clarify when the sentence was handed down for Akbari, who has dual British-Iranian nationality and was detained three years ago.

The convicted person appealed the sentence to the Supreme Court, which rejected the appeal.

The Intelligence Ministry has described Akbari “as one of the most important cases of infiltration” of the security of the Persian country.

The announcement of his death sentence comes amid protests that are shaking Iran following the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, after being arrested for not wearing the Islamic headscarf properly.

Tehran has accused the United States, Israel, United KingdomFrance and Germany to be behind the protests, in which nearly 500 people have died in police repression.

At least four people have been executed for their participation in the demonstrations and 17 have been sentenced to hang.

Iran It is one of the main countries in number of executions, with 246 of them in 2021.
