In statements to the media, the head of the government portfolio, who is the accusing party in the case “coup d’état I” against Camacho, confirmed that “the investigation has been expanded” and that now it would be up to investigate “other subjects” in that process.

The charges for active bribery and seduction of troops are based on a statement by Camacho, in 2019, in which he asserts that his father José Luis Camacho Parada “closed” an agreement with the military and police so that they “do not go out” to counter the protests. against the government of then President Evo Morales.

Added to this is a recent accusation by the Minister of Government who, in a press conference, asserted that the former commander of the Air Force (FAB) Jorge Gonzalo Terceros received money transfers from Governor Camacho.

Del Castillo mentioned that “those who received this money must also be investigated” and that this action should be carried out “minimally” against Terceros, who was commander of the FAB at the time of the Bolivian political crisis.

The minister asserted that the Prosecutor’s Office has already requested a report from the Financial Investigations Unit (UIF) and that it depends on it to know who else the judicial process will apply to.

Del Castillo said that these actions are carried out “with the sole purpose that the Bolivian people really know what happened and happened in the 2019 administration.”

The “coup d’état I” case stems from a complaint filed at the end of 2020 by a former deputy of the ruling Movement for Socialism (MAS) for the protests that in 2019 led to the resignation of then-president Morales.

For the ruling party, these demonstrations were part of a “coup” while for the opposition they were a reaction of the population to electoral fraud in the frustrated 2019 national elections.

Camacho, who is the governor of Santa Cruz, the largest region and economic engine of Bolivia, was arrested by the Police on December 28 and later transferred to La Paz in a questionable operation.

Two days later, a judge imposed four months of preventive detention on him, which he is serving in a maximum security prison located 35 kilometers from La Paz, at almost 4,000 meters of altitude in the highlands of the country.

Camacho’s arrest and imprisonment have sparked several protests in Santa Cruz with clashes between his supporters who are demanding his release and the Police, in events in which various public institutions have been destroyed.

Likewise, the lawyers for the governor of Santa Cruz have denounced violations and obstacles during the investigation process and have warned about the possibility that more arrests may be made against other regional leaders later on.
