UK tells Russia it will back Ukraine ‘until victory’

The head of British diplomacy, James Cleverly, said Tuesday that his country sent tanks to Ukraine to “push back” the Russians in the east and south of the country in a decision that angered Moscow.

“The message that we send to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin (…) is that we are committed to supporting the Ukrainians until they are victorious,” Cleverly said during a visit to Washington where he spoke of a ” moral imperative”.

“What Putin must understand is that we will have the strategic resistance to stand by him until the task is complete, and that the best thing he can do to preserve the lives of his own soldiers is to acknowledge that,” he added during an event at the Center. for Strategic and International Studies.

“The cost will be much higher in human lives and money if we let this war drag on,” he also said.

Military aid for Ukraine was one of the main topics of the dialogue between the British minister and his US counterpart, Antony Blinken, on Tuesday, who “applauded” the sending of British tanks to kyiv, without revealing whether the United States will do the same.

Washington gives most of Western aid to Ukraine, around $25 billion for security, but is reticent about delivering heavy tanks to kyiv for training and maintenance reasons.

Blinken indicated, however, that “there could be announcements in the coming days”, during a meeting between countries that support Ukraine militarily, at the US base in Ramstein, Germany.

He reiterated the determination of the United States to “make Ukraine have what it needs on the battlefield”, the “fastest means” to end the war, almost a year after the Russian invasion began on February 24, 2022.

Cleverly began a tour of the United States and Canada on Tuesday, just days after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised to deliver 14 Challenger 2 armored vehicles to kyiv.

The West has already sent light armor to Ukraine, but Britain is the first to supply heavy tanks.

The British Foreign Minister stressed that London made this decision because “we recognize that they need a strong defense capacity in the east and south”, both regions that Russia has tried to control since it invaded Ukraine.

“If Putin believed for an instant that the world would get tired of Ukraine (…) he made a huge error in judgment,” he said.
