Colombia extradites to the United States the brother of Senator Piedad Córdoba for drug trafficking

The government of Colombia extradited this Thursday to the United States Álvaro Córdoba, brother of the pro-government senator Piedad Cordobawho was requested by a court in that country for crimes related to drug trafficking.

The extradition operation began in the La Picota prison in Bogotá, from where Córdoba’s brother was escorted by members of the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (Inpec). to the Catam military base, attached to the El Dorado airport.

Senator Piedad Córdoba is part of the Historical Pact, the party that brought Colombian President Gustavo Petro to power.

When her brother was arrested, the senator He assured that neither of them has “any relationship with drug trafficking or with armed groups,” for which he asked that “political persecution” against her and her family end.

The senator is accused of having ties to the Colombian businessman Álex Saab, imprisoned in the United States, who accuses him of being a figurehead for the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro.

US CHARGES

The Colombian government approved the extradition of Cordovarequired by the Court of the Southern District of New York “for the charge of conspiracy to import narcotics,” Justice Minister Néstor Osuna said last September.

The decision was made known a month after the possession of Petro, who has already authorized dozens of extraditions for different crimes, mainly to the United States.

The Colombian government took this step after the Supreme Court of Justice endorsed the extradition of Córdoba, who was arrested on February 2 of last year in Medellín.

Initially, Alvaro Cordobawho is also a politician, was requested for the crimes of illicit drug trafficking, illegal possession of firearms and conspiracy to commit a crime.

However, the Supreme Court of Justice only upheld the charge for drug trafficking, since Córdoba is accused of allying with Mexican cartels and with emissaries of the FARC dissident alias “Gentil Duarte”, assassinated last year in Venezuela, to export cocaine to the United States. Joined.
