Sweden: Right-wing extremist burns a copy of the Koran in front of the Turkish Embassy

A Swedish-Danish ultra-rightist today burned a copy of the Koran in front of the embassy headquarters Turkey in Stockholmin an act that provoked the protests of the Turkish government.

Turkey had pressed before Sweden to prevent the act, which was authorized since it does not violate the laws of this country. In the hours preceding the demonstration, they summoned the Swedish ambassador to Ankara and canceled a visit by the Swedish Defense Minister in which the veto of Turkey at the entrance of the Scandinavian country to the NATO.

During the act, which lasted about an hour and was broadcast on social networks, the ultra Rasmus Paludan, defended his right to freedom of expression, attacked the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoganand the Swedish immigration policy, in addition to exhibiting a drawing that ironized the sexuality of the prophet Muhammad.

Paludan, a Danish lawyer who also has Swedish nationality, became a phenomenon on social networks in Denmark a few years ago for his controversial burnings of the Koran in immigrant neighborhoods, and his party, Rumbo Firme, fell tenths away from entering the Parliament in the 2019 legislative.

After several lesser sentences for racist crimes and a ban by the Danish electoral authorities for manipulating voter statements, Paludan tried his luck in Sweden, where he has carried out similar acts, which led to riots last Easter.

Paludan’s act coincided with another by a pro-Turkish organization, while fifty people, summoned by Kurdish groups, demonstrated in Stockholm against Sweden’s entry into NATO.

Ankara had already summoned the Swedish ambassador last week after a Kurdish group carried out a symbolic execution in Stockholm of a doll representing Erdogan, described as “very serious” by the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson.

The Swedish Prosecutor’s Office closed the case considering that the facts do not constitute a crime.

The Russian military intervention in Ukraine caused Sweden, along with neighboring Finland, to end their military non-alignment in 2022 and request NATO membership, which was approved at the last Alliance summit, held at the end of June in Madrid. .

The entry of both countries is pending the approval of Turkey, which lifted its veto at the last minute in exchange for certain conditions, embodied in an agreement, while the parties continue negotiating.

Ankara presses both countries to take drastic measures against Kurdish groups that it describes as “terrorists”, especially Sweden, which has a large community of Kurdish origin, and demands the extradition of residents of that country who support the Kurdish cause.
