Celac Summit: Lula begins his visit to Argentina with a floral offering to the liberator San Martín

The President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaparticipated this Monday in a floral offering at the monument to the liberator José de San Martín (1778-1850), in Buenos Aires, as part of his first visit to Argentina since he assumed his third term on January 1.

The Brazilian Head of State with the First Lady, Rosângela “Janja” da Silvaled this offering in the company of the Argentine Foreign Minister, Santiago Cafiero, who this Sunday received him upon his arrival at the Jorge Newbery Aeroparque in Buenos Aires.

After this official tribute to general san martinwhose revolutionary campaigns were decisive not only for Argentina but also for the independence of Chile and Peru, Lula da Silva heads to the Casa Rosada, headquarters of the Argentine Executive, to hold a bilateral meeting with his Argentine counterpart, Alberto Fernandez.

Both leaders seek with this visit, in which a series of agreements on different topics will be signed, to relaunch the strategic alliance between Argentina and Brazil, after the triumph of Lula da Silva put an end to the mandate of Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), of bad relationship with Alberto Fernández.

The heads of state plan to sign, together with ministers from different portfolios, agreements for mutual cooperation in energy infrastructure and financial integration; also in defense, health, science, technology and innovation and in Antarctic cooperation, according to official Argentine sources.

The Brazilian government added that the leaders will also talk about the Common Market of the South (Mercosur), a bloc that Uruguay and Paraguay complete, international trade, road infrastructure, the environment, disarmament, combating illegal acts, and nuclear and space cooperation.

This is the first international trip for Lula da Silva since he assumed the Presidency and includes his participation, on Tuesday, in the VII Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and then his transfer to Uruguay, invited by his head of state, Luis Lacalle Pou.

After the meeting, Fernandez Y Lula da Silva They will make a statement to the press to communicate the basic guidelines of the signed agreements and the joint statement.

The official visit of the Brazilian president will also include the opening of a binational Business Meeting and a meeting with representatives of human rights organizations from Argentina.

Although there has been no official confirmation, a visit to the vice president and two-time vice president of the country, Cristina Kirchner (2007-2015), is not ruled out.

At the end of the day, the presidents will share a cultural event.
