Álvaro Colom, former president of Guatemala, dies at 71

The former president of Guatemala Alvaro Colom Caballeros (2008-2012) He passed away this Monday at the age of 71, due to health complications.

So far the cause of his death is unknown, however, in December 2020 a lawyer for the former president confirmed to journalists that he was suffering from cancer.

Colom Caballeros won the presidency of Guatemala in the 2007 general elections with the National Union of Hope (UNE) party and ruled from January 14, 2008 to January 14, 2012.

Upon leaving the Presidency, Colom was accused in several corruption cases and ended up in jail.

To date, he was in house arrest for an alleged case of fraud committed during his administration.
