Gustavo Petro invites the United States to “help open a political dialogue table” in Peru

The Colombian President, Gustavo Petroinvited the United States to “help open a political dialogue table to help Peruvian society to a democratic transition in Peru” and put an end to the crisis that the country is going through.

In a message posted on his social networks, the head of state shared a video in which a squad of soldiers is seen supposedly arriving at a protest in Puno, to which he questioned: “The Organization of American States (OAS) calls this a democracy.”

Petro He had previously come out to defend former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo, something that earned him the rejection of the Peruvian Congress for “acts of interference.”

The new Government of Peru has shown its “deep discomfort” over the statements of Petro in support of Castillo, considering them an “unacceptable” interference in the internal affairs of the country in a diplomatic note that the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs delivered to the Colombian Embassy.

Colombia He also signed a statement with the governments of Mexico, Argentina, and Bolivia assuring that Castillo, whom they still recognize as president, is “the victim of undemocratic harassment,” something to which the Peruvian government responded by calling its ambassadors for consultations. When asked if he recognizes Dina Boluarte as president, Petro he avoided answering.

Castillo was dismissed on December 7 by Congress, after announcing that he would close the Legislature and govern by decree, and is currently serving 18-month preventive detention for the alleged commission of the crime of rebellion and conspiracy, charges for which he faces a possible sentenced to 10 years in prison.
