President of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel visits Venezuela for a working meeting with Maduro

The president of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canellanded this Wednesday in Venezuelato meet with his counterpart from the Caribbean country, Nicolas Maduroand so “continue debating and deepening the strategic lines and cooperation between both nations”.

The Cuban president, whose visit had not been announced, was received with military honors by the Venezuelan head of state and his wife, deputy Cilia Flowersat the Maiquetía Simón Bolívar international airport, which serves Caracas, according to images broadcast by the state channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).

Both leaders met for the last time, at least publicly, at the end of May 2022, when Maduro traveled to Havana, where the Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (SUNRISE).

The heads of state were scheduled to meet in Buenos Aires at the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), held this Tuesday, which Maduro finally did not attend due to an “aggression plan” against him, according to the Venezuelan Executive last Monday.

This is the second official visit of Díaz-Canel, as president, to Venezuela, with which, according to the public channel, it is ratified “the commitment to advance in a strategic agenda that favors and attends to both peoples with public policies”.

The Cuban president visited Venezuela for the first time in May 2018, shortly after taking office, in which he relieved Raul Castro.

Cuba and Venezuela have been close political and economic allies since the so-called Bolivarian revolution came to power in 1999.

Starting in the year 2000, Venezuela became the main supplier of crude oil to the Caribbean island through an agreement that grants preferential prices in exchange for medical and educational services.
