The UN asks that the deaths in the protests in Peru be investigated and that the victims not be stigmatized

The general secretary of the UNAntónio Guterres, asked the Peruvian authorities on Wednesday “to carry out prompt, effective and impartial investigations” into the deaths registered in the protests in the country, which have lasted several weeks.

In the message issued tonight by his spokesman, he also asked “that the stigmatization of the victims is avoided”, in addition to reiterating their “great concern” about the situation in the country and the number of deaths produced.

I also specifically request the authorities “to comply with their international commitments in the area of ​​human rights,” and I reiterate that The measures to suspend the right to peaceful assembly “must be limited to what is strictly required by the situation and be consistent with other obligations of international law.”

The call of Guterres It also contains a phrase that seems directed at the protesters, when it says that “Protests must take place peacefully, respecting the right to life and to protest.”

The Secretary General also underlines that It is essential to “generate the conditions for a meaningful and inclusive dialogue” to address the current crisis.

Till the date, According to data from the Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office, 46 people who participated in the protests have died in the clashes, while a policeman died after being burned alive by protesters.

To these victims, there are now ten deaths in events related to roadblocks and one death that occurred in the northern region of La Libertad, confirmed by the Police.

Likewise, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Acnur) reported the death of four Haitians who could not receive medical assistance due to roadblocks, in addition to an unborn baby confirmed by Unicef.
