Palestinian Authority describes Israeli operational massacre with 9 dead in Jenin

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) branded the operation as a “massacre”. Israel which ended today with nine Palestinians dead in the Jenin refugee camp, in what was the deadliest incident in recent years in the occupied West Bank.

“What is happening in Jenin and its countryside is a massacre carried out by the Israeli occupation government in the face of suspicious international silence,” denounced the office of the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, in a statement, where he urged the international community “to take urgent measures to protect the Palestinian people.”

For its part, the Islamist Hamas movement, which rules de facto in Gaza, praised the armed resistance in Jenin and assured that it leads “a timeless epic in the confrontation with the occupation.”

In turn, the Islamic Jihad group – against whom today’s Israeli incursion was directed – stressed that the Palestinian militants “are ready everywhere for the next confrontation”, and praised “the value of the resistance in the camp of Jenin”.

The camp is one of the epicenters of the Palestinian armed groups that oppose the most resistance to the Israeli forces, and in the last year the Brigade of Jenin. This acts relatively autonomously in relation to the already existing militias, but in turn has united a large part of its militiamen, including those of the Islamic Jihad.

Today’s Israeli operation resulted in heavy fighting that resulted in at least 9 deaths -in addition to armed men, including an elderly woman- and 20 wounded. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, four of them are in serious condition.

The fighting with the Israeli forces between the alleys of the camp Jenin -one of the most densified of west bank– They also left buildings destroyed and caused serious material damage.

In turn, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the Israeli forces prevented ambulance access to pick up the wounded, and fired tear gas into the pediatric department of a hospital, causing hospitalized children to suffocate.

The Army, for its part, assured that it carried out the operation to stop an Islamic Jihad squad involved in attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians and that it was planning more operations.

For its part, the Israeli armed forces have been placed on alert to face a further escalation of tension that could imply the launch of rockets from the Gaza Strip.

Since the beginning of 2023, in just 26 days, 29 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in west bank. The dynamic of confrontations follows the same lines as in 2022, when Israeli raids and arrest operations in West Bank towns and subsequent clashes with Palestinian residents became almost daily.
