The UN exhibits a book with the names of millions of victims of the Holocaust

A huge book with the names of 4.8 million victims of Holocaust It has been on display since Thursday at the United Nations headquarters to commemorate the genocide of the Jewish people at the hands of Nazi Germany.

The installation, created by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, was inaugurated on the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which the UN will commemorate this Friday with an act at its General Assembly.

The so-called “Book of Names” is eight meters long, two meters high and one meter wide and collects in alphabetical order the names of 4.8 million victims documented to date, with their places of birth and death in the cases in which it is known

In addition, it includes a series of blank pages representing the more than one million unidentified victims, explains Yad Vashem.

“The six million Jewish children, men and women are lost forever, but their memory and their names must never be forgotten.” said the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, during the opening of the exhibition, in which the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, also participated, among others.

Guterres, in a speech, stressed the importance of keeping the memory of the victims alive, of continuing to identify those killed by Nazism and of reflecting on those crimes.

“Our world today is not immune to the poison of hate, the hate that says another person is less than me, less than human,” he warned.

The exhibition joins another inaugurated this Wednesday at the United Nations headquarters, in this case focused on the role of anti-Semitic propaganda, disinformation and conspiracy theories fueled by Nazism and that preceded the Holocaust.
