Colombia: exFARC kidnapped by the Clan del Golfo was released

The gulf clanthe largest criminal gang colombianreleased the peace signatory Wilson Oquendo and a relative whom he had kidnapped last Monday in the municipality of Ituango(northwest), the Comunes political party reported this Friday.

The two people, Wilson Oquendo and one of his cousins, were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in a humanitarian operation that took place in rural Antioquia.

“The people who handed us over were in adequate health conditions”said in a statement the head of the sub-delegation of the ICRC in Medellín, Ignacio San Román, who indicated that for them it is a priority to alleviate the suffering of people affected by armed conflicts and violence.

On the other hand, Senator Omar Restrepoof the political party commonsaid that the release of these two young people is “Thanks to the management of the Government and its High Commissioner for Peace, Danilo Rueda”and added that “This has been a good gesture to continue giving confidence to the peace that we Colombians long for.”

The senator added that “peace requires that the civilian population be removed from the conflict” and that Wilson Oquendo is accredited as a peace signatory and is dedicated “to their social and economic reincorporation with peasant productive projects.”

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has defended a policy of “full peace” to which it intends to link several armed groups that operate in the country to start peace negotiations, although for the moment the ELN is the only one with which a formal dialogue has begun.

On December 31, the Colombian head of state announced a six-month ceasefire with the National Liberation Army (ELN), which he subsequently did not accept as it was not an issue agreed upon at the Venezuelan negotiating table; the Central General Staff of the FARC dissidents, the Segunda Marquetalia, the Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AGC, also known as the Clan del Golfo) and the paramilitaries of Sierra Nevada.

According to the Institute for Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz), since the signing of the peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC, 348 signatories have been assassinated.
