“What we heard this morning is propaganda that we already know”the head of the Italian government said when asked in the Ukrainian city of Irpin, where Russia has committed some of the worst documented abuses during the war, about Putin’s words.

Meloni argued that Western countries tried to “avoid conflict” with diplomacy.

“The truth is that on the other side there is an invader and on this side there is someone trying to defend themselves”said Meloni, who described it as a “paradox” that it is “the victim of this aggression is the one who is trying to present a peace plan”referring to the 10-point document submitted by kyiv to end the war.

The Italian prime minister also spoke of the passage from Putin’s speech in which he described the Ukrainian government as a “regime” contrary to the interests of the people of the country. “What I see here is a people that is fighting”Meloni stated.
