A controversial bill promoted by the governor of Floridathe republican Ron DeSantiswhich would allow the carrying of a firearm without the need for a permit, received on Tuesday the approval of a committee of the Legislature by classifying it as a measure of “public security”, the name with which it is expected to be approved in March.

We have to go back to the Constitution of the United States. People have the right to bear (weapons)said state representative Chuck Brannansponsor of the bill, during a session of the state House Judiciary Committee.

On Monday, a committee of the Florida Senatethe Senate Committee on Criminal Justice, also approved the measure.

In April of last year, DeSantis took his conservative agenda a step further by promising to sign a law allowing state residents to carry a firearm without a permit, something he called “constitutional bearing”.

Currently, Floridians don’t need permits to buy a gun, but they do need permits to carry them in public, so if passed, this law would eliminate that requirement.

The term of “constitutional bearing” refers to the right to carry a firearm, either discreetly or openly, thanks to the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which gives the American people the right to keep and bear arms.

Carrying without a permit is NOT public safety”the Democratic representative wrote on Twitter. christine hunschofskywhose district, Parklandswas the scene of a high school mass shooting Marjory Stoneman Douglas which in 2018 left 17 people dead.

It’s very hard to agree with something called Public Safety when it relaxes the background check requirements to conceal carrying, and also removes the requirement to demonstrate competency.”, Hunschofsky said today, according to the Local 10 media.

For her part, the also Democrat Fentrice Driskella member of the Florida House of Representatives since 2022, warned that “more people walking around with more guns make our communities less safe”.

Most Republicans, DeSantis voters, gun owners, and white voters”Oppose the carrying of firearms without a permit”, as highlighted last December in a study by the Giffords organization, founded by the former Democratic congresswoman from Arizona Gabby Giffordswho in 2011 survived a shooting attack in Tucson.

The study revealed that opponents of the bill include Republicans (65%) and voters of DeSantis himself (60%) in Miami-Dade, Florida’s most populous county.

In Florida, Republicans control the state legislature and have enough votes on their side to get this bill through, which is expected to pass next March.
