From the public administration to the narco

García Luna worked in the intelligence corps for a decade and headed the Federal Investigation Agency (AFI), in charge of fighting organized crimeduring the government of Vicente Fox (2000-2006).

He was also Secretary of Public Security during the six-year term of Felipe Calderón (2006-2012).

According to the information collected by the US government and exposed in the trial, García Luna turned to crime in January 2001. upon becoming a member of the Sinaloa cartel.

“García Luna, a trusted public servant, used his official position to help this violent drug cartel in exchange for millions of dollars in bribes,” said Homeland Security Special Agent in New York Iván J. Arvelo after the verdict. Tuesday.

The jury determined as a proven fact that between 2001 and 2012 the former Mexican official accepted money to facilitate the entry of tons of cocaine that Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s cartel introduced into the United States.

In the judicial process, 27 testimonies were presented, the majority by the Prosecutor’s Office, including those of well-known figures related to drug trafficking such as Jesús “El Rey” Zambada” and Sergio Villarreal Barragán, alias el Grande.

Prosecutors also stated during the trial that García Luna had lived in Florida since 2012 and had traveled frequently to Mexico since then.

His arrest occurred in Dallas (Texas, USA) in December 2019 and he remained in jail from then until the start of the litigation on January 17.
