Mexico: Two workers die after fire at Pemex

the state, Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex)reported this Friday that two of the five missing workers died after the fire registered yesterday in the Tuzandepetl Cavitysouth of Mexico.

“In the search activities for missing personnel, two bodies were found, which are being reviewed by the Forensic Medical Service, with prior authorization from the Federal Public Ministry,” Pemex said in a statement.

On Thursday afternoon, a fire broke out in the “PM-119” drilling equipment that provided maintenance to the Tuzandepetl-331 Cavity, in the municipality of Ixhuatlán del Sureste, Veracruz, without the causes of its origin being known.

In addition, the state oil company indicated that “the tasks to locate the three missing workers continue.”

Regarding the injured workers, Pemex stressed that two of them remain hospitalized and “they are stable and cared for” in a public hospital of the Mexican parastatal.

He also indicated that they will begin with the cleaning tasks, as well as that they will continue to search for the causes that originated this incident that left a column of smoke that could be seen from kilometers away, in different locations in the southern state of Veracruz.

“Actions continue to be carried out to determine the causes that caused the fire in the drilling equipment and the cleaning of the place will begin”said Pemex.

The facilities where the fire broke out are part of the cavity rehabilitation project at the Tuzandepetl Strategic Storage Plant, located in the municipality of Ixhuatlán del Sureste, Veracruz.

The same Thursday and prior to this event, a first fire was also reported inside the Lázaro Cárdenas de Minatitlán refinery, one of the largest in Latin America, where five more workers were also injured, with first and second degree burns.

In this event, Pemex presumed that the possible cause of the fire was the runoff of the product on a hot surface.
