Ukraine denounces Putin’s “cynicism” after visit to Mariupol

Ukraine denounced on Sunday thecynicism” of the Russian president Vladimir Putin after his surprise visit to the city of Mariupolcaptured last year by Moscow forces, and denounced that it was carried out at night as a “thief”.

“The criminal always returns to the scene of the crime (…) the murderer of thousands of families of Mariupol he came to admire the ruins of the city and (its) tombs. Cynicism and lack of remorse”, wrote the adviser to the Ukrainian presidency Mikhailo Podoliak On twitter.

This was Putin’s first trip to the occupied zone since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine in February 2022.

Mariupol, in the southeast of Ukrainefell into the hands of Moscow in May 2022 after months of siege and bombardment that devastated the city.

“The international criminal Putin visited the occupied Mariupol, at night “probably so as not to see the city murdered for its ‘liberation’ in the light of day”, wrote the municipal council of the port city on Telegram.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense claimed on Twitter that the Russian president visited Mariupol “like a thief (…) under cover of night”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that Putin decided to make the trip at the last moment. It was a visitvery spontaneous”, he stressed.

“His movements in the city were not planned either”, he added, referring to a visit to a local theater and a meeting with some local people.

The visit of the Russian president to Mariupol is added to Saturday’s visit to the peninsula of crimeain the framework of the ninth anniversary of its annexation by Moscow in 2014.
