Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al Sudanirecalled this Sunday how the fall of the regime of the dictator saddam hussein supposed the “moment of change” in Iraq and ignored the word “invasion” to refer to the assault by the international coalition led by USA in the Arab country twenty years ago.
“Today we find ourselves on the 20th anniversary of the overthrow of the dictator’s evil regime. We remember the pain and suffering of our people in those years that were dominated by wars that isolated us from modernization and development until the moment of change came in 2003.″, he said in a speech at the Dialogue Conference of baghdad.

The politician stressed that it was the Iraqi people who had the command to “plan the future of the country” and challenged the “rockets and terrorist suicide attacks” when going to the polls in 2005 for the first general elections since the invasion, and after the approval of a new Constitution in a referendum.
However, Al Sudani pointed out that it was after the Constitution that the challenges increased in the country “for terrorism”, a stage that he considered “cruel” for the sectarian violence unleashed in those years that turned Iraq in “a death news market”.
“As we are on the anniversary of the change, it is convenient to affirm that the regime that ended with its people and structures, still remains in various institutions and we still suffer from an old legal system and a mentality that does not change, and that need reform in all its forms”, he asserted.
On the 20th anniversary of the fall of Saddam, Al Sudani stressed that now Iraq “has recovered its natural position as an incubator for dialogue, conferences and various international events”, referring to how the Arab country has sought to strengthen its position as a mediator in the region, particularly between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

But, he noted, thebig challenge” with which you are now is “regain the trust of the citizen” which was ended by “so many promises” unfulfilled and the “management weakness” of the system.
Despite the close ties with Iran, Al Sudani, who has held the position since October 2022, wanted to make it clear that he supports that USA keep its troops in Iraq within the framework of the international coalition fighting the jihadist group Islamic State.
Precisely, the root of this extremist group comes from the US invasion and its first “caliph”, Abu Bakr al Baghdadibecame even more radicalized in the prison of Abu Ghraibwhere it was revealed how the Americans abused the Iraqis, and recruited many of the members of the extremist organization.
