The story behind the myth of the ghost nun of 100th Street, in Bogotá

If there is a place in the capital city that taxi drivers are afraid of, that is, without a doubt, the bridge of Carrera Séptima with Calle 100. It is not insecurity that frightens drivers, much less the dark: it is the mysterious ghost of a nun with a black habit that does not let them have peace.

The myth runs through the streets of Bogotá that, in the early hours of the morning, the nun appears in search of a taxi service. Not even the taxi drivers’ refusal manages to break her will.

Apparently, if the driver ignores her call, the nun reappears in the back of the vehicle.

Galeano Morales, a taxi driver with years of experience, told the magazine ‘Hello’ that one night in December he passed the bridge and saw the nun in the middle of the rain. She didn’t stop him, but seconds later “when I was already going down 100th Street I saw this woman in the back of my car,” she said. The surprise was such that the driver almost lost control of the car.

Some suggest that the supposed spectrum makes its terrifying appearance in the middle of the rain; others, on the contrary, assure that it is present regardless of climate.

Although there are many versions regarding the presence of the nun, there is something in which the testimonies do agree: the request of the spectrum, once it manages to enter the vehicle. The stories indicate that she asks to be transported to a convent.

The theory that has passed from mouth to mouth is that the woman fled the convent and met a violent and cruel death. His will, once he died, was to return to the religious house to finally find peace and his method of transportation, according to witnesses, was to call a taxi on the street.

The first records of the publication of the myth on YouTube date from the year 2017; however, on Twitter there are threads from the year 2021 that tell the story. In all the comments there is at least one user who claims to have witnessed a similar scene.

“My dad saw her when he was driving a taxi,” said a user; while another noted: “I am shocked to know this story, since without knowing of its existence I experienced this event firsthand, I personally saw the ghost of the nun.”

Baseless myth or terrifying reality, what is true is that the appearance of the supposed ghost has led many taxi drivers to reconsider their route and, in some cases, even their profession.
