Gustavo Petro will travel to the United States next Sunday

Colombian President, Gustavo Petrowill travel this Sunday to USAwhere it will make stops in NY, stanford and Washingtonon an official trip in which he will participate in a forum of the UN and work is being done to produce a meeting with his counterpart Joe Biden.

Petro will arrive this Sunday, April 16, and will participate on Monday in the opening of the 22nd Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issuesat the headquarters of the UN in NY and that will have as a special theme “Indigenous peoples, human health, planetary and territorial health, and climate change: a rights-based approach”.

On Tuesday he will travel to California to give a lecture at the Stanford University on the environment and social justice from a Latin American perspective, moderated by Professor Alberto Diaz-Cayeros.

Petro will then move to Washingtonwhere he will remain until Friday when he returns to Colombia and where at the moment he has an agenda at the residence of the Andean country in the US capital.

Both governments are working so that the first bilateral meeting between the Colombian and Biden can take place, who have already met in international forums.

At the end of last month, the High Level Dialogue between USA and Colombia, where the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinkenand the Colombian foreign minister, Alvaro Leyvawhere various issues that are in the interest of both countries were addressed.

At the end of said meeting, the charge d’affaires of the US embassy in the South American country, Francisco Palmierirecognized that a meeting between the two leaders was a possibility “very logical”, but it remains in the hands of the White House its formal announcement.

Blinken was one of the first senior international officials to make an official visit to Colombia since Petro became President last August, and with him they discussed sensitive issues such as the new way of dealing with drug trafficking that the president of left.

However, both countries have shown great agreement on multiple issues such as environmental protection or even giving drugs a public health problem approach and working on seizures in a more coordinated manner.
