The opposition did not specify a date for the meeting, but it will be before the conference called for April 25 in Bogota.

the summit on Venezuela will be attended by representatives of USA, Canadathe European Union (EU) and other countries of Latin America. Neither the government nor the opposition will participate.

The dialogue between the government and the opposition has been blocked since the last meeting, on November 26, pending the disbursement of some 3,000 million dollars blocked abroad, which would be released according to an agreement for social programs.

There is also expectation around putting an end to the economic sanctions that weigh on this Caribbean country and “much more democracy”, as declared by the Colombian president on Monday in the United States.

On Sunday, the Colombian foreign minister, Alvaro Leyvawas received by the president Nicolas Maduro in Caracas as part of a preparatory meeting for the meeting. The issues discussed were not revealed, but the Venezuelan government has conditioned on several occasions the return to dialogue if the sanctions by the United States and the EU cease.

However, Maduro has given his support to this initiative promoted by Petro. The Venezuelan president expressed “all the support” for that quote “have success”.

The opposition, for its part, hopes that this summit will serve for the “immediate“reactivation of the negotiations for which it hopes to achieve conditions for the holding of” free, observable and verifiable elections, which comply with democratic standards.

Among its main demands is the lifting of disqualifications for possible candidates in the 2024 presidential elections, in which Maduro will seek a third six-year term.
