Berlin urges China to “be clear” on sovereignty of ex-Soviet countries

The German Government today urged China to “clarify” its position regarding the recognition of the full sovereignty of the countries that belonged to the Soviet Unionfollowing the declarations of the ambassador in France questioning that they have an “effective status”.

There can be no doubt about it”, affirmed a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to urge Beijing to “clarifyyour position on the matter.

The reaction of berlin follows the statements of the Chinese ambassador in France, Lu Shayewho questioned in a television interview that the countries that were part of the Soviet Union have a “effective statusbefore international law.

The ambassador’s words have already provoked criticism at a European level and especially in the three Baltic republics, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, which were part of the Soviet Union and are currently members of both the European Union (EU) as of the NATO.

The issue will also be addressed at the conference of ministers of EU foreign affairs which is celebrated this Monday.

The President of the European Council, Charles-Michelannounced this Monday that relations between the EU and China will be discussed at the summit of leaders of the twenty seventh of june.
