Geologists detect “slight increase” in activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano

According to a statement from the SGC, on May 1 There was a slight increase in the seismic activity associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic edifice”.

The information added that the earthquakes were located mainly at an average distance of 2 kilometers from the Arenas crater, at depths between 3 and 4 kilometers.

The largest magnitude earthquake was recorded during this increase, with a magnitude of 1.8 with respect to the seismic activity related to the movement of fluids within the volcanic conduits”.

Some seismic signals of this type have been associated with pulsatile ash emissions that were confirmed through the web cameras used for volcanic monitoring.

In addition, the ash emission recorded today was highlighted “both for its energy level and for the height of the spine”which in dispersion reached 3,000 meters.

He SGC concludes that the volcano’s activity continues at an orange level, which indicates that there is a probability that in days or weeks it will erupt more than it has in the last 10 years.

an eruption of Nevado del Ruizfollowed by a melting of its glaciers, caused an avalanche on November 13, 1985 that devastated the city of Gunsmithin the department of Tolima, where more than 23,000 of its 25,000 inhabitants died, the largest natural catastrophe in the country.
