IACHR urges Peru and Chile to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants at the border

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) expressed this Tuesday its “worrydue to the situation on the border between Peru and Chili and urged these two countries to “ensure and coordinate humanitarian assistance” to the migrants who have been stranded for days in this border area.

(The) IACHR expresses concern about the situation on the border between Arica (Chile) and tacna (Peru), where migrants with protection risks and conflicts with police authorities are observed”, said the commission in a brief statement published on its Twitter account.

Likewise, the IACHR urged the States to guarantee and coordinate humanitarian assistance to foreign citizens, mostly Venezuelans, Haitians and Colombians, who remain in the border area between the two countries, unable to return to Chilean territory or enter Peru, without access to basic services.

States must strengthen cooperation in international migration, especially in humanitarian emergencies”, indicated the commission.

He added that security and order measures must take into account human rights such as the life and integrity of individuals and families in human mobility.

The government of Peru last week declared a state of emergency at all its borders after incidents occurred in the border area with Chilinamed Concord line.

Last Friday, Peru deployed 196 soldiers and 390 police officers to the southern Peruvian region of Tacna, adjacent to the Chilean region of Arica. National Police to reinforce immigration control in the area, where the situation remained calm on Tuesday.

Peruvian and Chilean authorities have assured, in recent days, that they are evaluating the possibility of opening a humanitarian corridor to address the migration crisis on their shared border and to be able to return displaced persons to their countries of origin.
